ARTS COURT GETS SMACK IN THE FACE
New World Theatre Project presents Trainspotting, based on Irvine Welsh’s stark representation of a group of disaffected Scottish youths who turn to heroin use to escape the banalities of modern-day existence. The film version of the novel became the cult hit of 1996 and the play adaptation enjoyed critical acclaim in the UK for turning theatre on its ear. On October 20th, New World Theatre Projects brings to the Arts Courts stage the raw drug infested tales of Irvine Welsh featuring a diverse professional cast.
“Ottawa needs more alternative, progressive theatre, ” remarks Don Fex, Director of the company. “Trainspotting challenges the traditional sense of theatre by being graphic and in your face.”
The cast features Mark Muntean as Renton, Brendan McNally as Begbie, Brent Rouleau as Tommy, Maddy Lewis as Allison, Martin Flintoff as Simon and Brett Desrosier as both Lizze and June. Maddy Lewis has worked onstage in the UK at The Soho Theatre, Barons Court Theatre and Wimbledon Studios, credits include, “Napoli Millionaria”, “The National Theatre” and “Richard III”. Brendan McNally recently received the runner-up prize for best playwright at Ottawa’s first Golden Cherry Awards.
MORE THAN JUST A PLAY
The event will also include beats by Djs Eric and Andrew of Aloha room fame and an art installation, Charcoal Faces, by Dan Tarte.
Trainspotting opens at Arts Court Theatre October 20th and runs till the 24th. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for students and can be purchased by calling 564-7240.
